Un Dio delle sorprese

Domenica 15 settembre il culto è stato tenuto dal co-residente portoghese della Conferenza Metodista Europea, ospite della nostra comunità, per il loro incontro annuale bishop Sifredo Texeira.

6 Cercate il SIGNORE, mentre lo si può trovare;
invocatelo, mentre è vicino.
7 Lasci l’empio la sua via
e l’uomo iniquo i suoi pensieri;
si converta egli al SIGNORE che avrà pietà di lui,
al nostro Dio che non si stanca di perdonare.
8 «Infatti i miei pensieri non sono i vostri pensieri,
né le vostre vie sono le mie vie»,
dice il SIGNORE.
9 «Come i cieli sono alti al di sopra della terra,
così sono le mie vie più alte delle vostre vie,
e i miei pensieri più alti dei vostri pensieri.
10 Come la pioggia e la neve scendono dal cielo
e non vi ritornano
senza aver annaffiato la terra, senza averla fecondata e fatta germogliare,
affinché dia seme al seminatore
e pane da mangiare,
11 così è della mia parola, uscita dalla mia bocca:
essa non torna a me a vuoto,
senza aver compiuto ciò che io voglio
e condotto a buon fine ciò per cui l’ho mandata.
12 Sì, voi partirete con gioia
e sarete ricondotti in pace;
i monti e i colli proromperanno in grida di gioia davanti a voi,
tutti gli alberi della campagna batteranno le mani.
13 Nel luogo del pruno si eleverà il cipresso,
nel luogo del rovo crescerà il mirto;
ciò sarà per il SIGNORE un motivo di gloria,
un monumento perenne che non sarà distrutto».

Cari fratelli, care sorelle, la pace di Gesù sia con tutti voi.

In qualità di Vescovo della Chiesa Metodista in Portogallo, vi porgo i saluti del popolo metodista portoghese che ha iniziato a incontrarsi come tale nel 1854 nel distretto di Porto. In effetti oggi siamo ancora una chiesa minoritaria presente in 5 distretti dei 18 nel paese continentale.

Come uno dei due co-presidenti del Consiglio Metodista Europeo, vi esprimo la nostra gratitudine per averci accolto a Roma per l’incontro annuale e per prendere parte a questo Culto speciale. Possa Dio continuare a benedirvi e proteggervi.

Il Consiglio Metodista rappresenta i molti metodisti nei diversi paesi europei che condividono il vangelo di Gesù nella parola e nell’azione. Un esempio è dato da quanto la Chiesa Metodista e Valdese fa in Italia, inclusa la cura di quei rifugiati che cercano un posto sicuro in cui vivere.

Oggi sono qui per parlare di sorprese.

A quanti di noi piacciono le sorprese?

Dipende, potreste dire. Se sono belle, di solito ci fanno piacere, ma se non sono tanto belle, in generale preferiremmo farne a meno.

Oggi vorrei condividere con voi l’opportunità di riflettere al Dio delle sorprese che è il nostro Dio.

Vi è mai accaduto di essere stati sorpresi da Lui nella vostra vita? Sono sicuro che per la maggior parte di noi o per tutti noi la risposta è sì. In molti casi ne abbiamo gioito e in altri abbiamo incontrato difficoltà e sofferenze, ma alla fine per molti di noi è rimasta gratitudine per tutto ciò che è stato vissuto.

Soffermiamoci su alcune persone sorprese che si trovano nella Bibbia.

Mosè. Il popolo di Israele era schiavo in Egitto e un giorno, quando Mosè meno se lo aspettava, Dio venne a trovarlo e gli disse: “Ho bisogno di te. Vai e guida il mio popolo nella liberazione che ho concesso loro “. Mosè trovò delle scuse ma nessuna fece cambiare il disegno di Dio. “Sei tu quello di cui ho bisogno.”

Conosciamo la storia. Il popolo di Israele fu guidato da Mosè sulla via verso la liberazione dalla schiavitù in Egitto.

Un altro uomo sorpreso. Samuele, il Profeta. Quando fu mandato nella casa di Isai per ungere un nuovo re per il popolo di Israele, pensò che ognuno di quelli che gli erano stati portati davanti potesse essere il re, ma Dio lo sorprese scegliendo quello a cui nessuno pensava. Davide fu portato davanti a Samuele e Dio gli disse: “è lui”.

Sappiamo anche come Davide sia diventato un re importante per il popolo di Israele e anche per tutti coloro che sono diventati credenti nel suo Dio.

Paolo è un’altra sorpresa di Dio. Coloro che lo conoscevano non potevano credere in quello che sarebbe stato chiamato a fare. Perseguitava i cristiani e conobbe Cristo. La sua vita fu cambiata. Il persecutore diventò perseguitato. Era ed è tuttora una grande benedizione di Dio per tutti coloro che credono in Gesù come salvatore.

In questi pochi esempi troviamo un po’ del significato di ciò che Isaia dice nel nome di Dio: “I miei pensieri non sono i vostri pensieri, né le vostre vie sono le mie vie.”

Anche Gesù fu una sorpresa di Dio. Gli Ebrei si aspettavano un Messia con le caratteristiche che loro ritenevano necessarie per offrire loro la liberazione che stavano attendendo. Cosa invece ha fatto Dio? Ha mandato suo figlio a nascere non in un palazzo, non in un luogo di potere, non tra la gente importante. È nato molto semplice da persone semplici e è stato onorato da coloro che erano discriminati. E quando molti pensarono che avrebbe guidato il popolo in un processo di attuazione del regno di Dio, morì sulla croce. Molti pensavano che fosse la fine, ma la sorpresa è arrivata di nuovo ed è risorto dalla morte, è vivo e chiama tutti a seguirlo.

Il Dio delle sorprese era presente in Gesù. Ricordatevi ad esempio di Zaccheo. Voleva vedere Gesù. Trovò un posto su un albero. Gesù si fermò vicino a dove si trovava e gli disse: “Scendi, presto, perché oggi debbo fermarmi a casa tua.” Una incredibile sorpresa fu questa perché la vita di Zaccheo ne fu cambiata.

Ricordatevi di quella donna che aveva un problema di salute e credeva che toccando le vesti di Gesù sarebbe stata guarita. Toccò Gesù e fu guarita ma fu sorpresa quando Gesù chiese: “chi mi ha toccato?” Affrontò Gesù e lo sentì dire: “la tua fede ti ha salvata”.

Molti anni fa, mia moglie ha avuto un difficile problema di salute e vi è stato un tempo in cui anche io pensavo che stesse per lasciarci ma ci sbagliavamo, il Dio delle sorprese ha fatto quello che alcuni non si aspettavano e fu curata e dopo 20 anni sta ancora bene.

Ci sono alcuni di noi che hanno pensato di partecipare alla vita della chiesa solo partecipare alle attività, ma sono rimasti sorpresi quando sono stati chiamati a prendere parte ai ministeri della chiesa. In molti casi la sorpresa ha prodotto un grande cambiamento nella vita. Pensiamo a coloro che hanno dovuto lasciare tutto per adempiere alla loro missione.

Sono stato sorpreso quando ero un ragazzo e da un Missionario in visita alla mia famiglia mi è stato detto: “Dio ti chiamerà per il ministero pastorale”. Ho ascoltato in silenzio. Non sapevo cosa dire. Quello che ricordo fu che dissi a Dio: “se questa è la tua decisione, le cose accadranno naturalmente nella mia vita”. Dopo 4 anni di formazione sono diventato Ministro Metodista, 35 anni fa, e da allora le sorprese hanno continuato ad accadere nella mia vita e ministero. Ho reazioni simili a quelle di Mosè e molte volte dico: “Non posso essere io. Non sono in grado.” Sì, sei tu quello che voglio e sai che sarò sempre con te” è stata la risposta di Dio.

“I miei pensieri non sono i vostri pensieri, né le vostre vie sono le mie vie” dice il Signore.

Anche oggi siamo qui e le sorprese sono già avvenute. Molti di voi non si aspettavano di incontrare così tante persone diverse provenienti da diversi paesi europei. Molti non si aspettavano di ascoltare un predicatore dal Portogallo, che parla inglese per essere tradotto in italiano. Molti di noi non si aspettavano di essere sorpresi da Dio. Di solito diamo per scontato che le cose in chiesa vadano come sono sempre andate.

dice il Signore”.

Siamo qui per volgere la nostra preghiera a Dio, per essere benedetti per essere una benedizione. Siamo qui per essere sorpresi da Dio.

Qual è la sorpresa che Dio ha portato nella mia vita oggi?

Due settimane fa siamo stati benedetti da Dio con l’ammissione di un nuovo membro nella nostra principale congregazione Metodista locale a Porto, la chiesa di Mirante. Pochi giorni dopo eravamo allo studio biblico settimanale e quella donna era con noi. A un certo momento dell’incontro ha dovuto dire a tutti: “Ho avuto molte cose buone nella mia vita, ma l’esperienza avuta domenica scorsa quando sono stata accolta come membro di chiesa, è stata la migliore. Ho sentito Dio con me. È qualcosa di straordinario che fa la differenza nella mia vita “.

C’è una cosa che non dobbiamo dimenticare ossia: siamo alla presenza di Dio essenzialmente per mostrare la nostra gratitudine, adorarlo, pentirci dei nostri peccati, prestare attenzione alle Sacre Scritture, ascoltare la parola di Dio, invocare la sua benedizione e andare nel suo nome per essere una benedizione per gli altri. In breve, dobbiamo continuare a dire a Dio: “Benedicimi e usami” e le sorprese continueranno ad accadere.

Il Dio delle sorprese continuerà ad agire in modi che non immaginiamo neppure, ma niente e nessuno può impedirgli di costruire il suo regno dove tutti coloro che credono in Lui hanno un posto, dove tutti sono accolti, dove tutti sono importanti, dove tutti godranno del  musica del cielo, dove tutti godranno dell’immenso amore di Dio.

Siate preparati. Le sorprese continueranno. Potreste essere chiamati a fare questo o quello, ad andare qui o là, ad aiutare o a essere aiutato, o anche a vivere ciò che non riuscite nemmeno immaginare.

“I miei pensieri non sono i vostri pensieri, né le vostre vie sono le mie vie», dice il Signore.”

Possa il Dio delle sorprese essere sempre il nostro aiuto.

Dear sisters and brothers, may the peace of Jesus be with you all.

Being the actual Bishop of the Methodist Church in Portugal I bring you greetings from the portuguese Methodist people who started meeting as such in 1854 in the Porto District. Actually we are still a minority Church present in 5 districts of the 18 in the continental country.

Being one of the two co-Chairs of the European Methodist Council I bring you our gratitude for welcoming us in Rome for the annual meeting and to take part in this very special Worship Service. May God continue blessing you and keeping you.

The Methodist Council represents the many Methodists in the European different countries who share the gospel of Jesus with what is said and with what is done. One example we have is what the Methodist and Valdensian Church has been doing in this country that includes the care of those refugees looking for a safe place to live.

I am here today to speak about surprises.

How many of us enjoy surprises?

Depends can you say. If they are good normally we enjoy but if they are not so good, we tend to prefer not have those.

Today I am bringing you the opportunity to think about the God of surprises who is our God.

Weren’t you surprised by Him in your life? I am sure that for the most of us or for all of us the answer is yes. In many of them we enjoyed and in some others there were difficulties and some suffering but in the end there was for many of us gratitude for all that was lived.

Let us for a moment think of some surprised people we find in the Bible.

Moses. The people of Israel were in Egypt being slaves and one day, when Moses wasn’t expecting, God came to see him and told him: “I need you. Go and lead my people in the liberation I have for them.” Moses found excuses but none of them changed God’s mind. “That’s you that I need.”

We know the story. The people of Israel was led by Moses in the way to be liberated from the Egyptian slavery.

Another man surprised. Samuel, the Prophet. When he was sent to the house of Jesse to anoint a new king for the people of Israel, he thought that each one of those who were brought before him could be the King but God surprised him choosing the one that nobody thought about. David was brought before Samuel and God told him: “that’s the one.”

We know also how David became an important King for the people of Israel and also for all those who became believers in his God.

Paul is another surprise from God. Those who knew him couldn’t believe in what he was to be called to be doing. He was persecuting Christians and met Christ. His life was changed. The persecutor became persecuted. He was and still is a great blessing from God for all of those who believe in Jesus as savior.

In these few examples we find a bit of the meaning of what Isaiah was saying in God’s name: “My thoughts are not your thoughts. My ways are not your ways.”

Even Jesus was a surprise from God. The Jews were expecting a Messiah with the characteristics they thought were necessary to give them the liberation they were looking for. What was done by God? Sent his son to be born not in a palace, not in a power place, not amongst the important ones. He came very simple to be born from simple people and celebrated by those who were discriminated. And when many thought he was going to lead the people in a process of implementing the kingdom of God, he died on the cross. Many thought was the end but the surprise came again and he rose from the dead and is alive calling everybody to follow him.

The God of surprises was present in Jesus. Remember for example Zacchaeus. He wanted to see Jesus. He found a place in a tree. Jesus stopped close to where he was and told him: “Come down. I want to be with you in your house.” An amazing surprise was this because the life of Zacchaeus was changed.

Remember that woman that had a health problem and believed that touching the garments of Jesus was the way to be cured. She touched Jesus and was cured but she was surprised when Jesus asked: “who did touch me?” She faced Jesus and heard him telling her: “was your faith that saved you.”

Many years ago, my wife had a difficult health problem and there was a time that even me thought she was about to leave us but we were wrong, the God of surprises did what for some wasn’t expected and she was cured and after 20 years she is still well.

There are those of us that thought were to be taking part in the church life just to be there in the activities but were surprised when were called to take part in the ministries of the church. In many cases the surprise made a big change in the life. Thinking in those that had to leave everything to accomplish their mission.

I was surprised when I was a young boy and through a Missionary visiting my family I was told: “God will call you for the pastoral ministry.” I heard in silence. I didn’t know what to say. What I remember was me telling to God: “if this is your decision, things will happen naturally in my life.” After 4 years training I started being a Methodist Minister, 35 years ago and since then the surprises continued happening in my life and ministry. I have reactions a bit like Moses and many times I say: “Can’t be me. I am not able.” “Yes, that’s you I want and you know that I will be always with you” has been the answer from God.

“My thoughts are not your thoughts and my ways are not your ways” says God.

Even today we are here and the surprises happened already. Many of you were not expecting to meet so many different people from different European countries. Many weren´t expecting to have a preacher from Portugal, speaking in English to be translated for Italian. Many of us weren´t expecting to be surprised by God. Usually we assume things in Church will happen as ever.

“My thoughts are not your thoughts, says the Lord, and my ways are not your ways.”

We are here to bring our worship to God, to be blessed to be a blessing. We are here to be surprised by God.

What is the surprise God brought to my life today?

Two weeks ago we had the blessing from God of receiving a new member in our main local Methodist congregation in Porto, the Mirante church. Few days later we were in the weekly Bible study and that woman was with us. At certain time of the meeting she had to tell everybody: “I had many good things in my life but the experience I had last Sunday when I was received as member of the church, was the best one. I felt God with me. That’s something extraordinary that makes the difference in my life.”

There is one thing we can’t forget that is: we are in the presence of God essentially to show our gratitude, to worship him, to repent from our sins, to give attention to the holy Scriptures, to listen the word of God, to seek his blessing and to go in his name to be a blessing for others. In short we must keep saying to God: “Bless me and use me” and the surprises will continue happening.

The God of surprises will continue acting in ways we even have no idea but nothing and nobody can stop him building up his kingdom where all that believe in him have a place, where all are welcomed, where all are important, where all will enjoy the music of heaven, where all will enjoy the immense love of God.

Be prepared. The surprises will continue. You may be called to do this or that, to be here or there, to help or to be helped, or even to live what you even can’t imagine.

“My thoughts are not your thoughts, says the Lord, and my ways are not your ways.”

May the God of surprises be always our helper.
